About

Once upon a time in a market town called Retford, there was a beautiful bookshop known locally as Wonderland…

Wonderland Bookshop is a specialist children’s bookshop located in Retford, North Nottinghamshire.

Opened for the first time on 4th May 2019 (Star Wars Day), this enchanting wonderland full of books aims to inspire children and young adults both in reading and writing. We specialise in brand new children’s books, suitable from birth right through to young adults, with a wide range of titles on offer, as well as designated dyslexia friendly and LGBTQIA+ shelves. After something specific? Our book elves can order in most books in print for both children and adults.

Wonderland reopened on 2nd November 2019 under the ownership of Helen Tamblyn-Saville. It changed name from The Barrister in Wonderland to Wonderland Bookshop in April 2021.

Helen

Helen is a self confessed bibliophile and loves children’s books. She has always dreamed of running a bookshop and grasped the opportunity with both hands to take over Wonderland.

Helen has always loved reading and took her first steps into bookselling when she worked at The Barrister’s Book Chamber. Helen has previously worked as a project manager and freelancer, as well as once serving as a district councillor. She loves Oxford Commas,  cake, vintage fashions, tenpin bowling, and politics. Easily identified by her colourful hair, she can often be spotted reading her way through the stock (she has a very soft spot for The Strangeworlds Travel Agency) and her favourite novels change according to her mood. She once bowled in the tenpin bowling world cup, is allergic to mushrooms and really likes cake.
