Once upon a time in a market town called Retford, there was a beautiful bookshop known locally as Wonderland…
Wonderland Bookshop is a specialist children’s bookshop located in Retford, North Nottinghamshire.
Opened for the first time on 4th May 2019 (Star Wars Day) as the little sister of The Barrister’s Book Chamber, this enchanting wonderland full of books aims to inspire children and young adults both in reading and writing. We specialise in brand new children’s books, suitable from birth right through to young adults (plus a little section for grown-ups), with a wide range of titles on offer, as well as designated dyslexia friendly and LGBTQ+ shelves. After something specific? Our book elves can order in most books in print for both children and adults.
Wonderland reopened on 2nd November 2019 under the ownership of Helen Tamblyn-Saville. It changed name from The Barrister in Wonderland to Wonderland Bookshop in April 2021.
Meet the team!
New owner Helen is a self confessed bibliophile and at the ripe old age of 35, still has no qualms about cracking open a well worn copy of “First Term at Malory Towers”. She has always dreamed of running a bookshop and grasped the opportunity with both hands to take over Wonderland.
Helen has always loved reading and took her first steps into bookselling when she worked at The Barrister’s Book Chamber. Helen is also a district councillor, and has previously worked as a project manager and freelancer. She loves Oxford Commas, cake, vintage fashions, tenpin bowling, and politics. Easily identified by her colourful hair, she can often be spotted reading her way through the stock (she has a very soft spot for The Strangeworlds Travel Agency) and her favourite novels change according to her mood. She once bowled in the tenpin bowling world cup, is allergic to mushrooms and really likes cake.
